Glenys Barton's supreme art as a sculptor in ceramics has been celebrated ever since she left the Royal College of Art. From her subsequent spell as artist-in-residence at Wedgwood, she proceeded to contemplative exploration of the human spirit in the tranquil timeless heads and more specific portraits of artist friends, patrons and family. This book was published to coincide with exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, Flowers East and Stoke on Trent City Museum and Art Gallery. The illuminating text is written by Robin Gibson, Chief Curator of the National Portrait Gallery, and eminent critic Edward Lucie-Smith. The photography is by Adrian Flowers This comprehensive survey of the sculptor's life and art encompasses all the beauty and serenity of Glenys Barton's sculpture.

In this age of photography, video and installation art, there are those who decry the emphatic persistence of figurative painting. What can the painted image express that other more 'modern' media cannot? Martin Gayford's authoritative text seeks to answer this and other fundamental questions by examining the wealth of approaches currently employed by British artists painting the human figure. His comprehensive survey ranges from the elder statesmen of the genre such as Freud, Hockney, Auerbach and Bellany through to rising starts like Alison Watt, Jenny Saville and Tai-Shan Schierenberg. Figurative painting, it appears, is as relevant and dynamic as ever.
